When the Spanish Conquistadors came to Mexico City in 1521 they were amazed at the

systems built by the Aztecs were centuries ahead of the outhouses still in general use
throughout Spain.
The luxurious bath houses, both public and private, contrasted even more sharply with
the minimal-to-nonexistent role of bathing in Spanish life of the era.
